Happy Birthday Dough Bakery!

What do you do when you turn one year old? Eat lots of vegan food ’till you have to unbutton your pants and celebrate with a gaggle of nice folks? Sounds like a good plan to me.

This past Sunday, Holly from Traveling Pink Lips  threw a plant-based potluck to bring ATL vegans together and celebrate Dough Bakery’s first year of awesomeness in Atlanta. For the past year, this vegan bakery along with Gutenfleischers (the vegan deli inside Dough) has been satiating my needs for whoopie pies, chocolate chip cookies, soft serve ice cream, ginormous deli sandwiches, queso, pimento cheese, milkshakes and more. The pups even get a fix with their peanut butter treats.

Here’s the event-planner extraordinaire greeting us. She’s about to let us loose on the food.

Everybody brought a dish + I brought my camera = vegan food porn. Here are a few highlights.

My final plates. Yes plates! My eyes were far hungrier than the size of my stomach. I tried to get one of everything but I’m sure I missed some dishes as some arrived later while I was stuffing my face. Everything was delicious! I brought a black bean and corn quinoa salad (recipe here), but forgot to get a pic of it because I was too enamored with everybody else’s dish. Holly also surprised everybody with a gift!

I was so excited to finally get my hands on some coconut bacon. I was also thrilled to get a Crazy Rumors lip balm (that balm is my jam) and a vegan key chain from Jeanette Zeis Ceramics.

There was a raffle to win the big bag of vegan swag.  All the raffle proceeds went to Animal Action Rescue.

Vegan gelato from Revolution Gelato. We’ve had this creamy-dreamy vegan gelato before but it’s not for sale yet, so it was a real treat to have some. I tried the new flavor, Hatch Chili Chip. I can not wait until this stuff goes on sale for realsies.  According to Jared the owner/creater this will hopefully happen sometime in the fall.

I’m so happy that Holly put this event together. She did an incredible job bringing together an awesome and diverse vegan crowd where I got a chance to talk to old friends and make some new ones. And big ups to Dough and Gutenfleischers for hosting and basically being ‘da bomb!

Enh. This was just enh. But again, we had no food in the house. We needed to get to the store.

Excuse me, can somebody point me to my next meal?

Not to toot my own horn, but when I set my mind on doing something, it gets done. And it gets done well. This weekend I decided to focus on eating all the good foods and having fun. It was tough at times, but I think I did a good job.

I started at Revolution Doughnuts. I was pleased to see they have clearly marked all vegan donuts with a “V”. I picked up a couple of apple fritters, a raspberry sprinkle, dark chocolate and a vanilla.

The apple fritter had real apple bits.

N and I went to the Atlanta Mini Maker Faire  at Georgia Tech later. We went last year and they have definitely grown. The fair is basically a place where a bunch of nerds and creative DIY’ers share and create. There are usually a bunch of robotics and engineering things in addition to crafty things.

Some highlights include watching shirts get screen printed. These cute designs are by Chris Neuenschwander at Noosh Studios,

Chinese calligraphy by Lin Li from the Atlanta Chinese Calligraphy Lovers Association,

eclectic bikes from bike kayaks, double-decker bikes

and a shoe bike that N actually rode. He didn’t fall.

There was also a lot of fun DIY projects for me kids, like mini steam rolling printing

and squishy circuits made out of homemade play-doh!

So much creativity a hungry girl it did make. So later that night, we went to the Atlanta Food Truck Park to watch our friends New Terminus  play (Former Fish Taco Fanatic’s husband is the drummer!) and get some grub.

We ate at the Soul Veg truckbut it was so dark that this is the only decent pic that came out. It’s  the last bit of N’s vegan cheese steak. I had jerk tofu with greens…oh, so good!

On Sunday, we made sure to get to Dough Bakery and Gutenfleischers to get their turkey dinner special before it ended. A hoagie stuffed with mashed taters, thinly sliced “turkey” and smothered with gravy. No words, all drool.

They had festive cupcakes that I couldn’t resist either.

All in all, I’d say a gluttonous job well done!

Dude, what’s a blog? I’ve been working so hard to help “put food on my family” that I haven’t had time or energy to post. So of course I’m just going to inundate you with pics from my phone now…of course. So, in no particular order…

Eggplant parm sandwich with a side salad and spicy mango and avocado cucumber gazpacho from Dulce Vegan Bakery & Cafe.

The easiest, creamiest and tastiest nooch-based mac and cheese recipe evah!!! Seriously. It’s from Susan Voisin over at FatFree Vegan Kitchen.

I think I made this twice in one week. This here second time, I stirred in some peas and elegantly dotted it with some Sriracha sauce. Oh yeah.

Our local asian market sells these frozen vegan fish slabs. One night, N fried them up and we ate them with cocktail sauce and noochy, bread-crumb covered baked brussels sprouts.

I haven’t picked up my knitting needles in awhile but this is what is on them, a short sleeve pullover/t-shirt thingy. After I passed the interesting neck section, I can’t bring myself to just knit the boring bottom part (knit, knit, knit…). The yarn is a hemp-based yarn.

One day when I accompanied N to Sam Flax art store, we saw this. This is the first seedbomb machine I’ve seen in Atlanta. Super exciting! How it works: insert coins, get seedbomb, throw seedbomb somewhere with dirt, repeat, watch your city fill up with plants native to the region.

N was feeling brave one day and decided to make Vietnamese crepes again. He did a better job than me.

Samoas-style vegan pancakes at Radial. Yes. Like the girl-scout cookies. I’ve been leary about Radial Cafe ever since we found a huge chunk of brisket, yes brisket, in our food after numerous strange interactions with a server who overly emphasized the fact that we were vegan. The pancakes were nom so Radial, you’re regaining my trust again. Maybe you and I were just meant to be breakfast friends.

Breakfast biscuits at Dough Bakery and Gutenfleischers.  These babies are so good and so reasonably priced. They also have these as grab-n-go meals kept warm or in the fridge for stocking up.

More eats from Dough Bakery and Gutenfleischers. This here is a vegan gyro wrap with a side of potato salad.

Yup, there’s more. Vegan french dip sandwich with a side of “beet it or I’ll kale you” salad. Love that name!

And of course, dessert. A strawberry whoopie pie from Dough Bakery.  Damn you Dough and Gutenfleischers for being so delicious! Not really, I love you guys and will probably be there tonight or tomorrow to get that SK philly special!

N’s parents gifted us with passes to the High Museum, so we went recently to see the Hale Woodruff’s restored Talladega College murals.

Across the street (nearly), is the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA). We went there too to catch the “Skate it or Hang it” exhibit.

I got a hold of some fresh mangosteens from the farmer’s market. I only had them canned before so I had no idea how to open them. First I sawed at em’ with a knife, then I found this video on how to open them. Life got easier and I ate them all.

A quick meal of quinoa chili over masher taters.

Tempeh-bacon, lettuce and tomato sammich with avocado and sprouts.

My favorite raw breakfast. Raw ackee mixed with 1/2 cup of smooshed young coconut, cilantro, tomatoes, black salt and chives. I had it with mangoes and avocados.

Hanging out at one of my favorite used bookstores, Book Nook, one rainy Saturday afternoon.

A curry dish made with Patak’s mild curry simmer sauce kale, tomatoes and canned seitan over jasmine rice.  N added coconut milk to make it creamier and less spicy for me because I am a spice wuss.

And finally, these guys. Always these guys keeping me sane. She stood like this for 2 minutes.

This guy kept me company when N was sick in bed one weekend. We laid about and he helped me grade papers.

Show me the Dough!

Vegan-Atlanta just got way cooler. Dough Bakery and Gutenfleischer’s have joined forces to create a delicious one-stop compassionate eatery. Since it’s a bakery and a deli, one can get breakfast, lunch and dinner here as well as pick up “meats”, sides, loaves of bread and tons of sweets to take home (or devour there). They also have many gluten-free options.

On our first visit, N got the HM (stands for ham) sandwich on Dough’s homemade white bread. I had to stop N from inhaling his to get this pic, those are finger imprints of a hungry man.

I got mine on their wheat bread. Fresh, soft bread, a generous portion of “meat” and plenty of toppings of my choice = The. Perfect. Sandwich. I also got the tasty poblano potato side salad

and a limeade.

We got two big chocolate chip cookies to go. Not sure why I got these to go because they were devoured pretty quickly.  My plan is to try a different sweet each time I go there because they have so many other things to try like pies, scones, muffins, cinnamon rolls…

On another visit, we got the soft serve with chocolate sprinkles and a milkshake with cake bits mixed in. Double nom. It’s been well over a decade since I’ve had soft serve and now, after having theirs, I’m wondering if I can even go a week.

And this week we got the special to go. Behold, the Cuban sandwich (Dough Bakery cuban bread hot pressed with HM, Daiya, pickles, house mayo and mustard) with a side of the Bahn Mi pasta. N got the black bean salad with cilantro lime dressing on the side, but I didn’t get a pic.

For dessert, a banana whoopie pie and a snickerdoodle.
